Babies and Eczema

Being a mother to three children just before this baby i thought i knew all that there was to know about babies from nappy changes to immunisations, but i stand corrected….. I was yet to learn about the dreaded skin condition ECZEMA… as previously stated none of my other three children suffered from this condition luckily so i was oblivious to what i needed to do and what to look out for ( signs of eczema)???

At the age of a about 3 months my babes began to get a bright red kind of rash (eczema) and i became concerned as i did not suspect eczema, at the worst i thought he was getting a heat rash…. well when after a few days it did not seem to disappear i went to consult my health visitor who also thought it looked like heat rash…. she advised me that the best was forward was not to use any soaps etc on his skin and that it would go away eventually.

After a further week it seemed to get worse with his skin begining to weap in certain areas around his neck, groin etc, i was then told that he most likely had ezema and so began the testing period… i was given a list of things that could help!!!! but i was also told that every child is different so it was a case of luck to see of i could find the right cream, ointment for my babe. I tried Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Grape Seed Oil….none worked long term…but they didi not make it worse or better.  Vaseline was the worst of all for my babes skin, i only applied it once but it seemed to burn at my poor babes skin, it made his skin ten times more irritated and inflammed (poor babe). Nothing seemed to be working :<.

Boots was the place where i eventually found the answer to my prayers for my baby.  Whist looking around in there baby section i stumbled upon there BOOTS own brand BABY EXPERT range which has everything from bathing oil, bath, head to toe soap to nappy cream.  I tried the body moisturiser first and was amazed to see the difference it made to my babies skin, the eczema seemed to settle with it so i bought all the other products in the range that i needed and touch wood since then i have had no probs with the eczema… We have been to see a dermatologist and she is happy with the progress he is making and advised me to carry on using the moisturiser at least three times a day to keep his skin hydrated.

I suppose to summarise i am one of the lucky few who manage to find something that is compatible with my babes skin so quickly.  I have met so many parents who are struggling to find that right cream, ointment for there little ones.  It can be so hard watching your child suffer like that and not be able to help them.  I have given a few parents the name of the products that i use and some have had success while others haven’t (one of those things i guess !!).
