Hunting for bird eggs as a child |
There are always some memories of your childhood which when remembered as an adult always send shivers down you spine. As a child, me, my sister and a few school friends used to always stop by a deserted building site on our way back from school and go bird egg hunting in its basement. The work on the building site had been halted for a fair while for whatever reason and birds had found safe haven in the basement to build nests, lay eggs etc. without being disturbed well except for us of course. We found a few eggs on a few occasions and proudly showed them to our mum who wasn’t very pleased and explained to us how we were causing pain and suffering to the birds by taking their unborn children away like this. The sense of adventure was still strong though, so we decided to just inspect the eggs instead of stealing them on future visits. A close encounter with a snake hunting for the same eggs was to finally put an end to our egg hunting missions soon afterwards. It was a very lucky escape as I tried to peek through one of the holes in the basement wall and found a snake sat inside the nest possibly having eaten the eggs as it seemed rather lazy. Thinking about the whole incident now makes me thank GOD none of us were seriously hurt or even killed.
